Why the conference is important?

There are differing views as to the purpose of the IDECs. Some see them as an opportunity to discuss shared problems in a supportive atmosphere, where you know that other people share your values. Others hope to spread the idea of democratic education by inviting possible converts and attracting favourable publicity. Others see the conference as a means of bonding schools so that they can offer support in times of crisis, on the "united we stand, divided we fall" principle. Some see them as a way of improving the public perception of the host schools in their own countries. The purpose of any given conference is decided by the group that is organising it.

About the open-space

OpenSpace lectures and workshops is the culture of IDEC conference. Anyone can freely organize their own lectures, workshops and invite people to participate. Apart from lectures IDEC witnesses workshops such as pottery, painting, dance, calligraphy, bamboo modeling, games, movie screening, and much more.

What it the idea of this conference?

Teachers and students have an equal vote in the decisions about their learning and their social lives At the Berlin IDEC in 2005 the participants agreed on the following statement: We believe that, in any educational setting, young people have the right: to decide individually how, when, what, where and with whom they learn to have an equal share in the decision-making as to how their organizations – in particular, their schools – are run, and which rules and sanctions, if any, are necessary.
